Идеи Томаса Джефферсона [Jefferson, Thomas] относительно общественного устройства новой демократической республики - Соединенных Штатов Америки, которые можно свести к следующим основным положениям: ограничение власти государства [limited government] в преимущественно аграрном обществе ["a nation of farmers"]; защита граждан от произвола правительства и других органов власти, нашедшая свое воплощение в Билле о правах [Bill of Rights], в частности в его положениях о свободе вероисповедания, слова и печати; главенство в обществе "естественной аристократии" [natural aristocracy] - наиболее просвещенных граждан; невмешательство государства в экономику и сокращение до минимума федеральных расходов; создание сильных правительств штатов, делегирующих часть своих полномочий федеральному правительству и отзывающих их в случае превышения правительством своих полномочий и нарушения им конституции. Эти идеи противостояли идеям федералистов [Federalists], выступавших за усиление всех форм власти
